Highcliffe Castle is a Grade 1 listed building built in the early 1830’s and situated on the cliffs of Highcliffe within Dorset. Highcliffe is just over a 20 minute drive from Bournemouth Town. The mansion has welcomed numerous famous visitors during its time from Royal visitors to famous authors.
It has amazing architecture which was unfortunately ruined by fires in the 60’s but has over the recent years been restored and is now a beautiful building to admire. Unfortunately full restoration has not taken place inside. On your visit you can view the rooms inside, however, these are basic rooms with photos of how the room used to look like. There are information points within the hallway which you can also read and get the history of the building and rooms. One of the rooms is used as a wedding venue and other rooms are at times used to display art which has been produced by various artists, including the local Secondary School. The stain glass window found in one of the rooms is a beautiful piece of work and definitely worth looking out for during your visit. The lower level of the building is open throughout the week but to view the upstairs you need to visit on specific days and have a specific Tour Guide to show you around. You will also find volunteer guides throughout the week who are able to answer any questions you may have. There is an entrance fee into the building, which is around £3.50 per adult, children (under 16’s) are free. If you want the guided tour then this will cost more. You don’t really get a lot for your money if you are doing the basic visit, however, it is an interesting visit, certainly if you are looking to purchase or just view some art. You will find a gift shop on your way out and next to the castle you will also find a friendly cafe which offer hot and cold snacks and beverages whilst taking in the amazing views. Parking at the Castle is free during the winter months and in the summer you can expect to pay a small fee. Many people take the opportunity to use the parking facilities, take a look around the beautiful gardens, visit the castle and tea rooms and then take a walk down the paths from the car park that leads to the sea front. You can certainly make a full day of your visit before heading back home to your Bournemouth b&b.
